Motorola Droid X2 Gets Clockwork Recovery, Custom ROMs Soon
The ever popular custom recovery software "ClockworkMod" is now available for Motorola's Droid X2, thanks to some creative engineering by Chinese developers uncovered by c21johnson at XDA. The image has gone through several steps in development, with device-agnostic code being written by "Koush", the Atrix 4G specific parts being developed by "tenfar" and finally Chinese developers porting this work to the Droid X2. The custom recovery enables nandroid backup and restoration, along with the possibility of flashing custom ROMs.
Prior to flashing the recovery image the device must be rooted, then an APK is installed which loads up the custom recovery. The method of access is different from most devices, requiring launching of the APK and is not available through a keypress sequence at bootup as is typical for custom recovery images. The application replaces the normal "charging" animation with a direct bootup into recovery. In order to access charging mode when powered off again, a switch must be toggled in the app. An unlocked bootloader similar to the one recently leaked for the Atrix 4G is not yet available, which is why the charging sequence override is required.
Users have reported that the device continues to charge even when booted in recovery mode, eliminating concerns that it might be put into a "soft bricked" state if the battery is run too low to change back to charging mode. Currently, only a Chinese-language ROM is available, which is what prompted the discovery of the recovery image.
