Nokia’s Athens May 17th event is just for “local launch of E6 and X7″.

Earlier today wes? found a tweet from @cmahr who works at Nokia, saying that the May 17th Nokia event is just a local thing to launch X7, E6 and Symbian Anna.

Nokia’s Comms Director, Mark Squires says “There’s a load of speculation regarding a Nokia event on 17th May in Athens. It’s the local launch of the E6 and X7, nothing else I promise”.

Tin foil conspiracy hats on; are they just playing this down because something actually is going to happen and they’re trying to keep suspicion/expectation down?

Or, is there really nothing to this event. Why the need for a local launch? By launch, is this when it’s available for sale no? What about Anna’s availability? Is this the date for PR2.0?

Nokia Siemens Networks acquires contract for maintenance of Shanghai Unicom networks

As the title suggest, Nokia-Siemens Networks seems to be making some headway into acquiring network build-out/maintenance contracts across the world. Not only are they significantly involved in the LTE build out being performed by LightSquared but they’ve just announced their involvement in maintaining the second-largest mobile operator in China. Hopefully they’ll become profitable in the coming years.

Samsung updates Galaxy S II, speeds up Swype and fixes auto-brightness issue

Samsung's Galaxy S II superphone didn't have many issues to begin with, and we're hearing there's one fewer annoying quirk today -- Android Community reports that a new firmware update (available via Kies) addresses the overzealous auto-brightness setting that continually irked us during testing. The i9100XWKE2 revision also apparently increases the responsiveness of the Swype software keyboard -- which is always a plus -- so unless this update also fries handsets or something, it sounds like a desirable one.

That inductive-charging backplate for the HTC Thunderbolt just hit the FCC, which means keeping the battery-devouring device juiced is about to get a little less inconvenient. Instead of having to plug in three times a day just to keep that LTE radio happy you'll simply be able to rest it on a charging mat... three times a day. The part made a brief appearance in the Verizon shop for $39, but the rumored April release date came and went without so much as a peep from Big Red. While we still can't say for sure when it will land, at least we know it's coming sooner rather than later -- and we've got one less reason to reconsider that pocket-busting extended battery.

Soon these worries will belong to the past. By simply pointing your mobile at the text and taking a photo your Nokia Multiscanner will translate the text and display the text in your chosen language.

How does this work?

After you have taken the photo of the text you want to translate, your mobile identifies the text in the photo and then translates it for you. This process uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to recognize the text and then the application uses language libraries to finds the equivalent word in your language.

Language libraries are stored in the device and can be updated over the air (OTA) directly to the mobile. The language library for an alphabet language, for example English, French, or Greek, requires approximately 600 kilobytes; and for a character-based language, for example Chinese or Japanese, 3 megabytes is required.

Nokia’s working prototypes are already capable of translating text between 52 languages.

BabyFeed: Mobile Application For Mother’s To Alert ‘Em About Feed Timings

Before you go on and read about this mobile application, I want you to know that this is strictly for ladies who have a small child or is pregnant. BabyFeed is a nifty application for those mother’s and wives who have a small child to feed and are looking for a simple way to keep a track record of all the feed’s given/diaper’s changed, etc. BabyFeed is a QT based mobile application for Symbian users which allows you to do exactly the same task with minimum efforts!

BabyFeed allows you to keep a track of feedings, medicines and diaper/nappy changes of your young one(s) right on your mobile phone eliminating the need of noting down the things on a separate place. It gives your the functionality to register weight, height and cephalic perimeter measures of your baby, which can, in future, be used to compare with other data in graphical form. Moreover it’s ability to integrate notifications with phone’s agenda and alarm system allows sound alerts whenever it’s time to give feed, etc. Besides that you can also set BabyFeed app to automatically send a sms notification to your husband, doctor or anyone else when you give medicine to your baby thus both of you will be able to keep track of the timings at which medicine was given.

Although I wasn’t able to fully test this application (yet to be married ) but was fairly satisfied with what this app did barring the following few things that I think would make BabyFeed even better app to use:
The tab alignment in header isn’t very user friendly.
A brief intro about using this app should be shown after accessing this app for the first time. Some of the featuresfunctions are confusing.
Support for landscape mode would have been great! (Doesn’t affect the performance much but can solve the tab alignment issue.)

BabyFeed is available for download on Nokia Ovi Store. It is being sold at a small price of Rs. 50 (approximately $1) which I think could have been made available for free by displaying ads within the app itself.
